Extra – Translating Video Closed Captions

We have had occasions when new overseas students have joined classes which we have assisted. We found translating Captions to our YouTube videos assisted these students to keep up with the class until their grasp of English improved. We observed that the Captions also assisting the students to check both their English understanding and their English conversation with their classmates. The video below demonstrates how to translate English captions into several languages. It also gives a fun check of translation accuracy by translating Ying’s Mandarin Captions back in to English.

When we started producing these videos about a decade ago, Google’s automatic translation was not that good. Recently it has shown massive improvements, and on-line reports (2017) suggest 140 billion words being translated per day.  The potential for world-wide learning, almost regardless of a student’s original language, is staggering!
